About the position

A postdoctoral fellowship in representation theory, under the guidance of Sondre Kvamme, is available at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at NTNU starting January 2026. The successful candidate will be offered a 4-year position. The place of employment will be Trondheim, Norway. The project will be conducted in the research group for Algebra at NTNU.

About the project 

The position is part of the project “Monomorphism categories, finite abelian groups, nilpotent linear operators, and the Birkhoff problem” funded through a Researcher Project for Young Talents grant by The Research Council of Norway (FRIPRO). 

A major goal of the project is to develop techniques and tools for studying the Auslander—Reiten theory of monomorphism categories, and to investigate the interactions with other areas of representations theory. The candidate is expected to work on topics related to the project, such as representation theory of monomorphism categories, topological data analysis, and Auslander—Reiten theory.

Duties of the position

• Conducting high quality research, both related to the position and to one’s own research projects. 
• Writing and publishing papers in international, peer-reviewed journals.
• Participate in the Algebra research group.
• Participate in and organizing international activities such as conferences and research stays.
• Teaching (clarified and specified in more detail if desired).
• Mentoring students at all levels (bachelor, master and PhD).

Required selection criteria

• You must have completed a doctoral degree in mathematics. PhD students in their last year are also invited to apply. NOTE: Documentation of the obtained doctorate must be presented before you can take up the position. 
• Good oral and written skills in English.
• Good communication and collaboration skills and an independent, self-driven working style are essential.

If you do not already have educational competence that meets the requirements for a position as associate professor in Norway, NTNU will arrange for you to acquire such competence during the employment period. In such cases, you will also be assigned relevant teaching as part of the career-promoting work.

If you cannot document skills in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish at level A2 upon employment, you must complete Norwegian courses corresponding to at least 15 credits before the end of the employment period. NTNU will facilitate this.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations for the Universities and Colleges Act (university and colleges regulations) and Regulations for the degrees philosophiaedoctor (ph.d.) and philosophiaedoctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) for general criteria for the position.

Preferred selection criteria

• Sound background in algebra and preferably a strong interest in both homological and computational methods.
• A strong track record of high level research in representation theory of finite dimensional algebras or related topics, relative to the time since defending the phd.
• Experience with Auslander—Reiten theory, monomorphism categories, or topological data analysis.

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 594 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 4 years.

The position is conditional on external funding.

The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control (legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are considered to be in conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed.

• A copy of the doctoral thesis. If you are close to submitting, you can attach a draft of the thesis. 
• Research plan.
• Academic works - published or unpublished (up to 10 publications).
• Name and contact information of up to three referees.

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.

If you have had leave or another break in your career, it is important that this is stated in your application so that the selection committee can take this into account and that the amount of your research may be reduced as a result.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal qualities. Motivation, ambitions and potential for research will also be emphasized in the assessment of the candidates.
