About the position

The Quattrocolo group at the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience has an opening for a PhD Candidate in developmental neuroscience. 

The position is based in the Quattrocolo group, a research group part of the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience. Recently, the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience has been awarded the Centre for Algorithms in the Cortex, a new center of excellence which will be funded from 2023 for 10 years by the Research Council of Norway. The position is a full time (100%) position, with a 4-years contract, starting in Fall-2025 (flexible starting date).

Your immediate leader will be the Associate Professor Giulia Quattrocolo.

About the project

The main research interest of the lab is the development of cortical circuits, specifically investigating the role of different cell types in the wiring of neuronal networks. The project will focus on circuit development and how axons find their proper synaptic target during development. We aim to combine different techniques, such as cell-type specific viral vectors, growth cones preparation, flow cytometry and omics analysis. The successful candidate will study how cell-type specific synapses are established during development.

• Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate
• Carry out research of good quality within the framework described above
• Academic publications and popular science dissemination
• Participate in the research group 
• Participate in international activities such as conferences and/or research stays at foreign educational institutions

Required selection criteria

• You must have a Master's degree in Neuroscience or related quantitative science discipline. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. 
• You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
• You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's Doctoral Programme.
• A strong interest in developmental neuroscience.
• Proficient in spoken and written English. 
• Experience with rodents and certificate from the course in Animal Research in Norway (or equivalent).

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations for the Universities and Colleges Act (university and colleges regulations) and Regulations for the degrees philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) and philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) for general criteria for the position.

Preferred selection criteria

• Experience with techniques used in cellular and molecular neuroscience (e.g. western blot, immunohistochemistry)
• Basic programming skills (such as MatLab, Python, R)
• Experience with subcellular fractionation techniques (such as synaptosome or growth cones preparation)
• Experience with tissue microdissection, ideally from newborn/young mice
• Experience with proteomic and/or transcriptomic analysis

Salary and conditions

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK  536 200,-  per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary. 

The employment period is 3 years for the doctoral work in addition to 1 year of career promotion work. (A minimum of three work years of the total term period must be dedicated to doctoral work.)

For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in medicine within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.

As an employee at NTNU, it is important that you keep yourself up to date with academic and organizational changes and adapt to them.

For the necessary academic and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

The appointment is carried out in accordance withthe principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control(legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technologyand services).
